The Crinkled Cheesecloth Gauze Runner

What it is

This is a table runner made from 100% polyester gauze in a crinkled cheesecloth weave. The fabric is light, matte and softly textured, so it drapes rather than sits flat. The edges are raw and unfinished. A little fraying is normal and part of the cheesecloth look.

It reads relaxed and rustic on the table. Use it on its own for a simple layer, or over a plain cloth when you want more texture.

Sizes

Two lengths, both 35 in (90 cm) wide.

A runner usually looks best when it hangs 6 to 12 in (15 to 30 cm) over each end of the table. If you are between sizes, go longer for a fuller drape.

• Terracotta

The deeper tones, burgundy and terracotta, suit fall and holiday tables. Beige, white and sage green stay quiet all year. The pinks and blues work for showers, birthdays and spring settings.

How to use it

Lay the runner down the center of the table, lengthwise. Let the ends fall evenly. Because the gauze is light, it bunches and folds easily, so you can push it into soft gathers instead of smoothing it flat.

A few ways to style it:

• Run it alone over a bare wood table for a casual meal.
• Layer it over a solid tablecloth for contrast in texture.
• Gather it loosely around a centerpiece of candles, dried stems or a low bowl.
• Use the longer size across a buffet or console, not just a dining table.
• Pair two runners side by side on a wide table if you want more coverage.

For parties, the crinkled texture hides creases and small spills well, which makes it an easy pick for showers, birthdays and holiday dinners.

Care

Machine wash cold. Hang dry. Low iron if needed.

A few notes:

• Wash separately the first few times, since the raw edges can shed a little loose fiber.
• Skip the dryer to keep the crinkled texture and the raw edge as they are.
• If you iron, use a low setting and press lightly. High heat can flatten the crinkle.
• Trim any long loose threads with scissors. Do not pull them.

The frayed edge is meant to look a little undone. It will settle after the first wash or two.
